What's Lovely for July 22, 2010: Awesomefantabulouslovelyamazingandotheradjectivesthathaven'tbeeninventedyet package from...

alternative text

I can't tell you how excited I was when I saw this bright yellow box on my front porch. How excited? THIS EXCITED!!!!!! Though I wasn't literally jumping up and down, I was wide-eyed as an eight-year old kid on Christmas day. Only it's better, because it's Christmas in July. Christmas in July is amazing in every way except one (Santa will be throwing off his snowsuit for a pair of boxers, yeesh).

My, I got sidetracked.

We've been planning this package exchange for awhile-- and now, with the blissful emptiness that is summer, it has become possible. Not only is getting mail exciting, but mail from blogger friends who live far away? Priceless. And since I have several questions from Indigo that I need to answer, this post shall be entirely Tangerine Umbrellas on an Indigo Day theme!

alternative text
Look at how neatly and prettily Indigo wrapped up her gift! All purdy like, I tells ya.

1.If you were to change your name, what would you pick?

I actually like my name, is that too vain to say? Charlene isn't a name you hear every day (though I have called it the name that only 50-year old women in menopause commercials have). But I have thought about this before-- if I had to change my name, I'd go with Irene. Boring, right? It rhymes with Charlene. I'm like the poor man's poor man's Shakespeare.

Out of the magnificent menagerie I've been blessed with, one of the most unusual(ly awesome) were the pig popper and a pink feather.

2. If you had to decorate your house floor to ceiling in one pattern (wallpaper, furniture, picture frames, sheets, as if your name was Olive Snook...) what pattern would you pick?

I'd definitely go with varying shapes and sizes of stripes. Pinstripes, fat stripes, you name it. Can you imagine how streamlined and ridiculous my house would look like??

alternative text
alternative text
Cami enjoyed the pig popper (hopefully I'll share a video of her playing with it later) immensely, but wasn't amused when I tried to put Tangerine's gift of the pink feather in her collar.

3. You are trapped in a room filled with rising dough with only an apple, a handkerchief and a non working toaster. The walls are soundproof and there is a door, but it is locked, and it is 15 feet a way and the dough in front of you is already 6 feet high. In two minutes the dough will have risen so high that it will suffocate you, how do you escape?

I'll obviously realize upon polishing the non-working toaster with the handkerchief that it's in fact the
Brave Little Toaster who's just sleeping. I'll lightly smack him to wake him up, and though he'll be a little perturbed that I slapped him awake, he'll be more than glad to help me. He'll then dive into the rising pile of dough and use his toaster powers to electrify the dough and then summon millions of toast that we'll both use to crush the dough into a corner. The Brave Little Toaster will allow me to use some of his inner wires to fiddle and open the locked door and in our triumph we'll both share the apple. And if all that doesn't work, I'll use magic and then eat the apple. The end.

Tangerine sent over these beautiful Chinese paper cut-outs that were so delicate and fragile that I felt like I was holding a real butterfly.

4. You are offered the job of your dreams. What is it?

It's always been a problem with me to focus on one set career path, and the number of choices has always daunted me. However, at this point, I'd love to be offered as a graphic designer/artist at a fashion magazine or be a part of the making of film and television title design like
this. Of course, there's always that dream I once had to be a singer on Broadway. Ah, pipe dreams, don't we all have them?

5. What, in your opinion, is the best thing since sliced bread?

No offense to sliced bread, but you know what, there are a fecking ton of things that can beat it. For example, this package. It's fecking awesome and it's full of love. Is a bread full of love? No, it's full of bread and carbs. Though I love carbs, so whatevs.

I keep all my letters, postcards and miscelleneous things with writing on them in this box. It's gradually yet surely getting fuller.

If I may be so bold, I have one more thing to say.

The second song on Indigo's CD
(Scott McKenzie's "San Francisco") was playing when I read this comment over at Ruby Slipper Journey's blog-- "It makes me so happy that someone is considering taking up sewing, possibly partly inspired by little moi!"

That's when it hit me (albeit softly).

Blogging brings us all together. If it weren't for blogging, then that blogger wouldn't have been affected by the other blog. If it weren't for blogging, then I wouldn't be listening to this
Andrew Bird song (he's currently trilling his violin and whistling, of course). If it weren't for blogging, then my room wouldn't be littered with many treasures and I wouldn't be quite so full of thanks, grace and a little bit of guilt (mind you, there's only a bit of guilt because Tangerine and Indigo are so generous to give such amazing gifts that I feel like I don't deserve this at all).

This is when the music swells, figuratively if not literally.

When I really stop to think about this, I'm overwhelmed. My chest feels heavy with feeling, but it's not overbearing. It's light yet has a steady weight at the same time. It's hard to put how happy and thankful I am quite succinctly into words that aren't blatant signs of flowery poetry, but I'll try. Thank you, Tangerine. Thank you, Indigo. Thank you, blog. Thank you, followers and blogger friends. Thank you for supporting me and replying to my neverending questions. You like me, you really like me (and this is when they drag me away from the stage).

Contrived melodramatics aside, I'm happy. It's enough to make you want to laugh, cry and hug a puppy all at the same time. But that sounds a bit too hazardous to try at home. Thanks y'all.

PS: I got what-- five?!?!-- mix CDs total. And they're all amazing. I really should share them with the rest of you guys in future posts. Last time thank yous and bear hugs for Tangerine and Indigo! :)

Hangover recovery

alternative text

What's Lovely for Thursday, July 8, 2010: Ending the day with someone who's got a friend in me (and vice versa)

My apologies for going AWOL, but lately I've been suffering from a hangover. No, not that kind. It's what I like to call-- Toy Story 3 hangover. This kind of condition left me completely emotionally drained by the glory, beauty and purely inexplicable tenderness of the movie that left me weeping like a bathtub overflowing. Are you happy, Indigo?? Are you happy, friends who hounded me to watch this film? In their defense, I totally wanted to watch this heavily anticipated movie, and wasn't about to miss this like I did Avatar (the James Cameron one, not the fucked up M. Night one).

But now I've made it sound like watching this movie is a harrowing experience. It really isn't. I'm just a towel that's been wrung one too many times. Go see this movie if you haven't already! It's beautiful and wonderful and hilarious. Who's your favorite toy besides Woody and Buzz ('cause you gotta love Woody and Buzz)? Mine prolly is Hamm-- he's so frank it cracks me up.

(The Thai Jewelry Giveaway ends tomorrow at 11:11 am CT, so enter if you haven't already!)

As you can see, my dear friend Lizzie has come to visit home and was gracious enough to watch Toy Story 3 for my sake-- which was the third time for her. Hey, what can I say: it's a good movie!

OK fun story: So I spotted these AMAZING pair of Western heeled boots on this girl and consequently had to stalk her and pretty much made my poor friends follow me through the crowd just so I can snap several pictures of her in this overall cute outfit which the boots just MADE y'know? And that's how Charlene stalked a girl in a pair of boots for about ten minutes.

We watched this one band play (who were pretty rad, actually, check 'em out), but it was the kids who were really rockin' out. So darn cute, I tell ya, they were running and jumping all over the place. Just look at that boy's face.

Me sporting a new look-- mango iced yellow lips. Strangely enough, I sorta like the idea of yellow lipstick. What do you think?

PS: Thank you so much to everyone who voted for me in that "Be as ironically aloof as possible!" contest I mentioned in the last post. I ended up coming in second place, I think!!

PPS: I'm currently feeling all up in a funk and have this ball of impatience in my chest. Or maybe it's from all those salt and pepper chips I ate...

PPPS: Again, more thanks to
Indigo for tagging me (yet again) for answering 5 Questions! And also to Marie of The Joy of Fashion for giving me the "I heart your blog" award! Thanks and exclamation points all around!

Happy 100!

alternative text
As you can see, my rage for lace continues.

Since my last post, I miraculously hit 100 followers in record time (thank you to all of you! and special shout-out to lucky #100
Caroline, who just started a new blog) and I actually had a sorta-successful photo shoot where I wasn't completely eaten alive by insects. So why am I not smiling? Well, if you're new to the whole daily-fashion-blog thingmajig, y'all need to take a look at Adored Austin's recent post about how wonderful yet silly taking these photos can be.

I totally laughed out loud (yes, I lolled) when I read her checklist of the quintessential fashion blogger: Outlandish headwear (check), Non-prescription glasses (these are real, biatch), Skyrocketing hemline (not really here, but I've been guilty), Hand on hip or head (uhhhhh that's my "model pose," shuttup) and.... Inability to smile. Why so srs, fashion bloggers?

alternative text

But let's get back to the subject at hand-- or as the French say, let's come back to our sheep-- I have two lovelies I must share in this post.

One: Poppy's 5 Questions that she tagged me in an embarrassing amount of time ago.

1: What will always make you laugh without fail?
So many things, it's quite ridiculous. Besides yukking it up with my friends, I just have a stupid sense of humor. I love puns. And lately, I've been greatly entertained by the likes of Wheezy Waiter, as seen here. See? I'm really a basket case.

2: What does your last text message say and who was it from?
It's from Liz, who's basically saying (she likes to write essays no matter what the context) that Skype wonked up and she has to go but she'll talk to me later. We're a regular odd couple. But who'd be Nathan Lane?

3: Do you collect anything?
I used to collect necklaces when I was younger, but now I try to hoard as many posters and tiny art prints (the cheap-o kind, mind you) as I can for my room. Clothing-wise, I'm an avid fan of scarves and childrens' souls. I mean, what....?

4: What were you doing 3 hours ago?
I was.... editing for this blog? I was sitting on my posterior. I was breathing. Also I was juggling knives on fire. Just a regular night.

5: What's the weirdest dream you've ever had?
I was bowling with Lady Gaga and a lamppost when.... aw wait, that's real life. OH I KID. I think the weirdest dream I had was one I had when I was a kid and there were these anime characters from Sailor Moon (I was an avid Moonie, teehee) doing a really low tightrope at a circus and then one of them started peeing and then it was just weird and I don't know. Freud, did you get that?

And here I present with a flourish, 5 Questions for 5 People. It's sorta like The Five People You Meet In Heaven, if Heaven were a blog, I guess. OK, so to Indigo/Tangerine (they count as one because they're Siamese twins, of course), Ali, Mel, Jennifer and Anna.

1. What's your favorite letter of the alphabet, and why?
2. If you could use any medium in the world to create your masterpiece, what would it be?
3. What's the silliest thing you've ever done for your blog?
4. What's something that's intangible (so no possessions) that makes you purely feel that you're alive?
5. A tiger is chasing you through the Himalayan mountains and then you slip on a frozen pancake. What do you do?

Now go! Mush! Go forth on thine blogs and answer these riddles o'mine!

Quirks are Perks

And drrrrrrrrrrrrrum roll: I've received a wonderful little award from Anna (aka Satinsugar) last week, and I'm finally getting around to it now. Whew.

Ze rules:
a.
mention the giver's name
b.
fill out the following questions
c.
name five bloggers in which you want to pass the award onto.

quirk: I know all the words to Beauty and the Beast's "Belle" down to a tee... even the talking parts. My friends are mildly annoyed and/or weirded out when I do this when we watch that movie.
pet peeve: When people say "that's so gay" without thinking.
favorite song: I don't have a definite, constant favorite, but I can never turn down listening to "Daylight" by Matt and Kim.
trend: Harem pants, mixing loud prints, 60s-inspired mod and always, always... stripes.
murder: Not that I want to commit murder anytime soon... but I'm definitely not a fan of sweatpants with words on the bum, Crocs or those clogs (not on me, anyway).
nail color: White! (another fun fact: I used to pronounce "white" with the "h," ahaaaawoops)

And now to pass on the love! But if you want to do the award too (I can't blame you, it's fun to do!), please go right ahead and do it. :)

Kate Maggie of postcards from... She's the eternal optimist who never sounds contrived. Her outfits are as sweet as her writings; she's a girl who I'd like to have a coffee with someday. (not that I generally drink coffee, but it's the thought that counts)
Krissy of Shimmer Like Gold: It's like she has this treasure horde chock full of beautiful images and wonderful bits and bobs. I always get excited when I see her new additions of "Head over Heels in Love with..." posts.
Jessica of Wardrobes and Whimsy: I can't help but love her cropped 'do (short haired girls, unite!) and her ensembles that are never cluttered and always stylish.
Ali of The Drawing Mannequin: Dang this girl is adorable. She's very chic and always has a lovely color theme in her outfits. I also am tickled how she names her things, names like Jean Bob.
Lucy of Lucy Marmalade: I seem to particularly love fashionable girls with funny blogs. Or funny girls with fashionable blogs? Either way, Lucy checks both of these categories. With her enviably fiery hair, her style is equally as colorful as her awesome personality. Plus, we're in an "exclusive" gang called "Well This is Embarrassing." So rad.

So long, farewell, auf Wiedersehen goodnight. Adieu, adieu, to you and you and you.

Alive Again Wardobe: The Piemaker (part I)

alternative text
Pretend that there's a delicious pecan pie in my hand, I know I am.

Remember how I've been talking about Pushing Daisies? Like for the past two posts? And how a little annoying that was? Yeah, I'm sorry about that. But the thing is, it was all prep for this little project I had hatched in my head. It hatched and grew gradually, and wouldn't go away, itching at me excitedly. OK, so I just compared a fun idea to a parasite in my brain, that was unintentionally gross.

ANYWAY. Amidst my plethora of school projects, I add on this just-for-fun project that I hope will both inspire and remix my wardrobe. Introducing: The Alive Again Wardrobe Project!

What I hope to do is base about two outfits per week to each major character from Pushing Daisies (if you don't know or haven't seen the TV show, please please do see it, it's sadly only two seasons long and is magic in a bottle). So I'm going to dedicate each week to the six main characters-- Ned, Chuck, Emerson, Olive, Lily and Vivian-- unfortunately Digby doesn't make this list, mostly because it's hard to emulate a dog and I don't own many furs.

alternative text

And who else better to kick it off this project than with Ned the Piemaker himself? The project's title actually comes from a quote of his.

With the coming of spring and warm weather, I think that's just what my wardrobe needs. So (deep breath) here's hoping for good luck on this series. I know Ned's excited.

Oh hellooooooo there, how did this picture get in this bunch, my oh my. [All screen caps taken by me, no copyright infringement, etc.]

Ned always wears a series of black and white, with the occasional gray and brown mixed in. It's interesting how in such a colorful show, the protagonist is swathed in dark neutrals. Though this makes sense, given his unusually morbid power. I based this outfit off of his pie-making uniform, if his apron was about... five times shorter. If that happened, his restaurant probably wouldn't pass FDA regulations, but would attract the fangirls, wouldn't it?

alternative text
Did you know? My hand normally glows around trees, especially dead ones that need to come back to life. This photo was my attempt of an emulation of this awesome Michelangelo-inspired promo.

What's Lovely for March 30, 2010: Sunshine upon more sunshine! Hark, an award!

Allison from Last Boat Leaving was way too nice to give me the Sunshine Award. You like me, you really like me! Wait, why is the music swelling??

My craziness aside, thank you so much, I loved your description of my blog. :)

Sunshine needed, STAT.

House and Thirteen are a little surprised that Donna from That 70s Show is on their show, but they're more confused as to why the hell she dyed her hair blonde. Try to solve that mystery, House. [Source from House on Facebook]

I'm a little behind on my House, but tonight was a rare chance that I could catch it on TV, so I jumped on the chance. I do realize that the show has slipped downhill ever since that debacle with Amber's death and House's interim at the mental asylum-- a good number of my friends have jumped the boat-- but I still hang onto the characters out of sheer loyalty. Hugh Laurie is consistently a bamf, and there are few things I love more than a good ol' bromance based off of the Sherlock Holmes stories.

TV's new Odd Couple, they'd probably be the most adorable duo were it not for that damn Jim and Pam. Just kidding, Jim and Pam are pretty fucking adorable. But do they constantly degrade and prank each other? That's true love.

But the reason why I bring one of my favorite TV shows up is that tonight's episode was especially pertinent because the patient was an avid blogger. Hmmmm, a 20-something woman who blogs about her life constantly; when have we ever seen that before? (Yuk it up, writers, you're all so hip and topical and I'm blogging about it, making me totally hip and topical) They portrayed her as this super-uber-hardcore blogger who almost pathologically had to record every aspect of her life to the world, much to the chagrin of her significant other. And guess why she became so sick? Blogging. Yes, she blogged herself to death.

alternative text
Today's outfit was nothing much (I look all blah 'cause it was an "off day"), but I just wanted to share my delightful feet. The bunnies say hi. That bicycle is plotting to kill me.

Shirt- Wet Seal, hand-painted : Cardigan- TJMaxx : Black skinnies- Gap : Shoes- Old Navy : Socks- bunny trail?

OK, just kidding. Spoiler alert, she did not blog herself to death and it was nowhere near the cause for her sickness. Tonight's episode was an interesting take on the modern phenomenon, but I was more amused by the side story with Wilson's porno and Chase's vanity rather than the formulaic turn of her is-she-or-isn't-she-gonna-die. I try to keep a fine line between my "blogging life" vs my "real life," but you can always bet that I strive to be as truthful as possible here. Sure, there's a snippet or bucketful of sarcasm here and there, but it's all sincere I swear.

What's Lovely for March 8, 2010: Sunshine.

The Sunshine Award, that is! The very sweet Samantha Jane was kind enough to pass this onto me, making it my very first blog award. Thank you, Samantha Jane!
